Fantastic film & TV costumes, part VI (dwarf lady!!)

Hello again!

I have the great pleasure of presenting to you the first dwarvish lady ever seen on film! In this 13 minute special featurette on the first Hobbit film you can catch a glimpse of her at 7:47-7:49, in other words about 2 seconds of nerdy happiness :)

Dwarvish women are never directly "seen" in any of Tolkien's writings, nor are they seen in any of the Rings films, but are referred to by Gimli in the Two Towers film as short and bearded like the men. At first I thought the last bit was untrue, but if you look closer she does have dark beard growing on her face! It is thankfully shorter than the men's :)

Her dress is in my opinion very cute; it is stocky, and like a Hobbit dress the basis of its shape comes from its bust enhancing corset. She has long bell sleeves which are vertically slit; a white undershirt and some kind of golden embroidery on the front of her burst. Her hair is bound up loosely on top and the rest hangs freely. A red ribbon tops off the outfit ;)

And is that an axe, a shovel or a staff she has thrown across her shoulder? I like to think it's an axe; she's a dwarf after all ;)

More to come on this dwarf lady I am sure :)
